I'm surprised you got an RPI chipset to work with ANY service at over
9600. The software flow control just can't handle faster speeds.
At this point, you are lucky to have had the modem working with CIS. I
don't know if you will ever get it to work with AOL, my guess is no. And
don't try it with an ISP, PPP will never be enabled as the software just
can't handle flow control with the extra overhead necessary with PPP &
TCP/IP.
Get yourself a REAL modem, and ask to make sure it doesn't have the RPI
chipset. If you get an external one, be sure your serial card has a 16550
UART, and be sure you get a hardware handshaking cable so that the
hardware will handle the flow control.
I'm sure there is someone out there who will post a "what-I've never had a
problem & I connect at 155,700 with my 14,400 RPI modem", but again, I
have to say that this will be the exception to a rather hard & fast
rule-software flow control just can't handle high-speed connections.
